What to look for in sapphire
Sapphire is corundum, the same mineral as ruby, in every colour except red. Blue is the colour the word carries, but sapphire also occurs in yellow, green, pink, orange and, in the Australian fields, in parti stones that hold two or three colours in one crystal.
Australia is a significant sapphire source in its own right. The Queensland and New South Wales fields have produced commercial sapphire for well over a century. Sapphire may be heated to change its colour. Read the individual lot's treatment disclosure and any supplied report; appearance alone does not establish treatment or value.
- Colour alongside size. Compare saturation, tone, cut and the stated measurements for the individual stone.
- Whether treatment is disclosed and whether a report supports the description. A treatment label is not a valuation.
- How the colour holds across the stone. Compare the photographs and ask about unclear zoning or windowing before bidding.
