Loose peridot at auction in Australia
Peridot is gem-quality olivine, and it is one of very few stones that occurs in only one colour. Every peridot is green; what varies is how much yellow or brown sits in that green. The purest, most bottle-green material comes mostly from larger crystals.
Peridot is essentially never treated. It is also softer than sapphire or topaz and sensitive to acid, so it suits earrings and pendants better than a ring worn every day.
What to look for in peridot
- How little brown is in the green, which is the whole of the colour grading here.
- Size, because the strongest colour tends to arrive with weight.
- Facet edge wear, since the material is soft enough to show it.
