What to look for in garnet
Garnet is a family, not a single stone. Almandine and pyrope give the familiar deep reds, rhodolite the purplish raspberry, spessartite the orange, and tsavorite and demantoid the green. Read the variety stated for the individual lot.
Do not infer treatment status from the garnet name. Read the lot's treatment notes and any supplied report, alongside its colour, cut and condition.
- Which garnet variety is stated. Similar appearances in a small photograph do not verify the variety.
- Whether the red goes black in low light, which the darker almandines do.
- The treatment disclosure and the evidence supplied with that particular lot.
