What to look for in topaz
Topaz occurs in a range of colours. Irradiation and heat are used to produce blue topaz. Check the individual lot's treatment disclosure and any supplied report; colour alone does not verify treatment or its effects.
Topaz can be colourless, yellow, brown, pink or sherry coloured. Topaz has perfect cleavage in one direction, so it deserves a setting that protects it and a little care in wear.
- Whether irradiation, heat or another treatment is disclosed, and what supporting information is supplied.
- Visible inclusions and the condition described for the individual stone.
- Chips along facet edges, which cleavage makes more likely than in a harder-wearing species.
