Loose ruby at auction in Australia
Ruby is red corundum. The line between a ruby and a pink sapphire is a judgement about where red begins, and it is worth real money, so it is a judgement we make conservatively and state plainly.
Ruby is routinely heated, and some material on the market carries glass or lead-glass filling in its fractures, which is a far more consequential treatment than heat. Every treatment we know of is written on the lot. Where we do not know, we say that instead of guessing.
What to look for in ruby
- The red itself. A ruby that reads pink in daylight is a pink sapphire wearing a better name.
- Filling, not just heat. Glass filling changes what the stone is and what it can survive.
- Origin where it is known, and the absence of a claim where it is not.
