Loose quartz at auction in Australia
Quartz is the most abundant gem mineral there is, and it arrives in the catalogue as smoky, rose, rutilated and a dozen other varieties. Amethyst and citrine are quartz too, and are listed under their own names because that is how people look for them.
Abundance keeps prices low and keeps quality high, since there is no reason to cut poor material. Most of what separates one quartz from another here is the cutting and the character of what is inside it.
What to look for in quartz
- Cut quality, which is what a quartz lot mostly comes down to.
- In rutilated stones, the arrangement of the inclusions, which is the point of the stone.
- Whether colour is natural or the result of irradiation, which some smoky material has had.
