What to look for in quartz
Quartz is the most abundant gem mineral there is, and it arrives in the catalogue as smoky, rose, rutilated and a dozen other varieties. Amethyst and citrine are quartz too, and are listed under their own names because that is how people look for them.
Compare the cutting, visible inclusions, measurements and condition of the individual lot. Read any treatment disclosure and supplied report; the quartz name alone does not establish quality or price.
- Cut quality, which is what a quartz lot mostly comes down to.
- In rutilated stones, the arrangement of the inclusions, which is the point of the stone.
- Whether colour is natural or the result of irradiation, which some smoky material has had.
