What to look for in fluorite
Fluorite is often collected for its range of colours, sometimes with several colours banded within one crystal. Compare the lot's photographs, measurements and condition notes.
It is soft and cleaves in four directions, so care and the intended use matter. Read the treatment disclosure and any supplied report for the individual lot.
- Colour banding, which is a feature of the species rather than a defect.
- Its softness, which makes it a display and pendant stone rather than a daily-wear one.
- Cut quality, since clean rough is plentiful and a poor cut has no excuse.
