Loose fluorite at auction in Australia
Fluorite is a collector's stone rather than a jewellery stone. It occurs in a wider colour range than almost any other mineral, often several colours banded within one crystal, and it is frequently very clean and very large for the money.
It is also soft and cleaves in four directions, which is why it is rarely set into rings. Bought for what it is, a cut fluorite is one of the most striking things a modest budget will buy.
What to look for in fluorite
- Colour banding, which is a feature of the species rather than a defect.
- Its softness, which makes it a display and pendant stone rather than a daily-wear one.
- Cut quality, since clean rough is plentiful and a poor cut has no excuse.
