What to look for in emerald
Emerald is the green variety of beryl. Inclusions are often described in the trade as jardin. Read the individual stone's condition notes and photographs rather than assuming clarity from its name.
The great majority of emerald on the market has been treated with oil or resin to reduce the visibility of surface-reaching fractures. This is accepted practice and it is also a treatment, which means it is disclosed, and it means an emerald should never be put through an ultrasonic cleaner.
