What to look for in citrine
Citrine is the yellow to orange variety of quartz. Heat treatment is used to produce some citrine. Read the treatment disclosure for the individual lot and any supplied report rather than assuming treatment from its colour.
The colour range runs from pale lemon through to a deep brandy orange. Compare saturation, weight, cut and condition together; no single description establishes what a stone should cost.
- Saturation and tone. Compare the colour you see across the lot's photographs.
- Whether heat is disclosed, since most citrine on the market has been through a furnace.
- Windowing in larger stones, where a shallow cut leaks light through the middle.
