Loose citrine at auction in Australia
Citrine is the yellow to orange variety of quartz. Most commercial citrine is amethyst that has been heated until it turns yellow, which is a stable and long-accepted treatment. Natural, unheated citrine exists and is less common.
The colour range runs from pale lemon through to a deep brandy orange. Price follows saturation more than weight, and large clean stones are readily available, so there is little reason to accept a poorly cut one.
What to look for in citrine
- Saturation. Pale lemon and deep madeira are the same species at very different prices.
- Whether heat is disclosed, since most citrine on the market has been through a furnace.
- Windowing in larger stones, where a shallow cut leaks light through the middle.
