What to look for in amethyst
Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz. Compare the colour, cut and measurements of each lot rather than assuming a price from the species name.
Look at how evenly the purple appears across the stone and how it changes between photographs. Read the condition and treatment notes alongside its appearance.
- Even colour through the stone. Amethyst zones badly, and a good cutter orients the rough to hide it.
- Whether the deep colour survives away from the photographer's lamp.
- Cut quality and condition, including the facet edges and any stated damage.
