Loose amethyst at auction in Australia
Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz. It is abundant, which is why a good one is affordable, and abundance is not a flaw. It is one of the few stones where a buyer can hold out for excellent colour without paying a scarcity premium for it.
Because supply is plentiful, colour does nearly all the work in the price. Deep, even purple with a red flash under incandescent light is the material to hold out for. Pale and grey stones are common and priced accordingly.
What to look for in amethyst
- Even colour through the stone. Amethyst zones badly, and a good cutter orients the rough to hide it.
- Whether the deep colour survives away from the photographer's lamp.
- Cut quality, which is where most inexpensive amethyst is let down rather than in the material.
